Rússia
The
development of domestic aviation in the last ten years has been defined by two
basic factors: near-total isolation from the world market and a substantial
surplus compared to demand within Russia itself. The country's aircraft fleet
consists of 6540 airplanes and helicopters, 70% of which are in a state of
disrepair, although no one is particularly worried about this. In spite of the
official existence of thousands of airlines, the first ten of them account for
up to 80% of air transport.

Flight
Snags Are Arriving on Schedule
The
nation’s air-travel system fell apart again last Friday night, when the space
shuttle Atlantis was just about the only flight that was on time on the East
Coast.
It is a
bit of an exaggeration, but consider the actual numbers of flight delays that
began choking the system on the East Coast Friday morning after an air traffic
control computer failed in Atlanta. By early afternoon, delays began piling up,
especially in the New York area, where flights were arriving two to three hours
late by early evening at Kennedy, La Guardia and Newark, and at Boston and
Philadelphia.

Southwest's high fares: that's easy for you to say, Professor.
After
many a sine, cosine, squiggle and other tools of the economist's dismal science
and troubling trade, a professor has reached the conclusion (sit down, please,
wait for it) that some airlines have higher fares than Southwest but that some
airlines actually really have lower fares than Southwest.
Professor
Volodymyr Bilotkach, who teaches his equation-inclined trade at the University
of California at Irvine, says that comparing Southwest fares with all fares on
Orbitz and focusing in on last-minute fares, that sometimes Southwest fares are
higher than those on Orbitz fares are lower. Professor B says he embarked on the
study because Southwest has a reputation for low last-minute fares.
That's news, but with Southwest attracting more and more
business flyers, maybe he has a point.
